UEFA to issue verdict on Euro 2020 hosting cities as Munich, Dublin and Bilbao face exclusion

UEFA, Europe’s football governing body, is discussing on Friday possible changes to the venues hosting the postponed Euro 2020 football championships.

A total of twelve cities had been identified as hosts – but some may be dropped because they can’t meet UEFA requirements to open at least 25% of their stadiums to fans, due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

Three cities so far haven’t been able to confirm if they’ll meet the target – Bilbao, Dublin and Munich.

The city had been scheduled to host Spain’s matches in Group E against Poland, Sweden and Slovakia, and it is also meant to host a round-of-16 match.

The Spanish football federation has offered Seville as an alternative to Bilbao, with games to be played at the La Cartuja Stadium, in the southern Andalusia region.

For what concerns Ireland, deputy prime minister Leo Varadkar admitted on Wednesday that allowing the public to the stadiums in June would be “too early”.

The other hosting cities – St. Petersburg, Baku, Budapest, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Glasgow, London and Rome – all said they can guarantee a potential attendance of 25% or above.

More on this story in the video player, above, with sports journalist Michael Kurn.
